The purpose of this chapter is to provide information developers need when selecting the right development tool to use for their Java applications as well as information on how to download and install the development tools. The chapter also includes:

 

  • Selecting the right development platform for Java applications
  • How to obtain and install the application signing keys needed to run applications that use restricted API’s on BlackBerry devices 
  • How to use the Preprocessor to generate different versions of an application from a single set of source files

 

Once the Java development platform has been selected, the following chapters describe in detail how to use the development tools to build and debug Java applications for BlackBerry. The chapters that follow provide information on each development tool individually:
