BlackBerry Development Fundamentals

What people have said about the book:

I bought your book and have since found it to be a valuable reference for understanding the key components to the BlackBerry mobile architecture. It is a must-read for both developers and support staff just beginning to work with the BlackBerry platform.

For consumer (non-Enterprise or BIS-connected device) users, there are two push options: Web Signals and the BlackBerry Push API’s. .

Web Signals are similar to the Browser Channel push discussed in chapter 6 although very limited in capability.  The BlackBerry Push API’s are similar to using PAP to push data to a Java application running on the device. Where chapter 6 discussed pushing to BES connected devices, the push options discussed in this chapter are used to push to external devices; consumer devices or devices that could be connected to a BES, but not under the control of the organization performing the push.

What both of these push options provide is the ability to push to any network connected BlackBerry device – even if the device is not being managed by an organization’s BES.  Both Web Signals and the BlackBerry Push API’s require that certain procedures are followed (and confirmed by the BlackBerry user) before any data can be pushed to a device.
