BlackBerry Development Fundamentals

What people have said about the book:

I have been thinking a lot about what you said about the book not being a "learning Java" book and I think (for me at least) that will be perfect. The Java part, aside from the nuances, is pretty much like C#, etc.... Throw in the RIM API and it's not a huge deal to learn. However, learning it completely and properly obviously will take some time. The stuff you mention, MDS etc..., will be the very topics I will need for sure come time for the release of your book.

The purpose of this chapter is to provide information developers need when selecting the right development tool to use for their Java applications as well as information on how to download and install the development tools. The chapter also includes:

  • Selecting the right development platform for Java applications
  • How to obtain and install the application signing keys needed to run applications that use restricted API’s on BlackBerry devices
  • How to use the Preprocessor to generate different versions of an application from a single set of source files

Once the Java development platform has been selected, the following chapters describe in detail how to use the development tools to build and debug Java applications for BlackBerry. The chapters that follow provide information on each development tool individually:

  • Chapter 13 covers the BlackBerry Java Development Environment (JDE)
  • Chapter 14 covers the BlackBerry JDE Plug-In for Eclipse (eJDE)
  • Chapter 15 covers the BlackBerry JDE Component Package
