BlackBerry Development Fundamentals

What people have said about the book:

It's a very easy read, and that's a good thing.  Wargo's background in teaching budding developers around the US shines through in the clear and concise way it tackles each topic. The content is relevant and appropriate for it's target audience and there are many asides that will interest more experienced developers.  Time and time again I found myself saying ah that's how that works (the MDS broken down in it's component parts, BlackBerry security, and how to compile Java apps for multiple devices to name just three).

BlackBerry Developer Conference 2010 PDF Print E-mail

I wanted to let you know that my publisher has arranged to have copies of BlackBerry Development Fundamentals on sale at the BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco the week of September 26th. We did the same thing last year and sold out before the conference closed. This year, there's a special book store being setup at the conference and they'll be raffling off several free copies of the book as well.

They've also scheduled a book signing for Tuesday afternoon between 12 and 1 (during lunch).

I'm am not presenting at the conference; I've tried submiting session abstracts in the past and RIM just won't select me. I didn't even try this year.

Book Available at Lotusphere 2010 PDF Print E-mail

I'm at Lotusphere 2010 this week presenting two sessions on mobile development. When I was accepted as a speaker, IBM asked whether I had published a book and offered me a chance to have the book available in the onsite book store at Lotusphere. There was no guarantee that it would make it into the store, but I was excited to see this morning when the Solutions Showcase opened (yep, I ran down as soon as it opened) that there is a stack of BlackBerry Development Fundamentals for sale (at 20% off) at the show. I'm so excited. We'll see how well they sell.  If you're here, please help me out by purchasing a copy. I'll even sign copies if you track me down.

My publisher also provided me with 5 free copies of the book to distribute at the conference. I'll give them away at the end of my sessions (I'm presenting three times). I'll most likely give them to the people who ask the best BlackBerry questions at the end of the session.

Chapter 5 Available Online PDF Print E-mail

My publisher has posted the complete chapter 5 online on the InformIT web site at: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1409789. This makes three chapters that have been posted so far.

Update PDF Print E-mail

Yesterday wrapped up the second BlackBerry Developer Conference. Pearson Education brought 75 books to the conference and sold all of them in advance of the book signing that took place at noon today. the book was very well received and we sold many more than expected.

I also learned today that the book is in stock and available at amazon.com. Any pre-orders placed should be on the way to you today or tomorrow at the latest. I also learned that books are being shipped to the UK, France and other countries, so you should be able to get your copies soon.

Thank you so much for your support.

Another Awesome Review PDF Print E-mail

Ronen Halevy just published another awesome review of BlackBerry Development Fundamentals - you can find the complete text here.

Some excerpts:

"What really amazed me about this book was that I learned quite a few things I never knew about the BlackBerry platform and I am not even a developer. Wargo does a brilliant job of explaining the whole infrastructure behind the BlackBerry ranging from BIS to BES to MDS to Push Services to all the different BlackBerry browsers."

"The book does what it sets out to do and gives you a crash course on the BlackBerry platform."

Thanks Ronen!
